Robert Thomas (Bob) Schmitt, 84, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Oak Crest Cherrywood Manor in Jenison surrounded by his loving family. Bob lived most of his life in the Grand Rapids area. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Lorraine (Sheets) Schmitt, his parents, Albert and Rose Schmitt, two brothers, Walter and John Schmitt, and five sisters, Mary Robach, Pauline and Bernadette Schmitt, Virginia Slominski and Helen Fitzgerald and a brother-in-law, John Sheets, Jr. Surviving are his children Ed (Jacque) Schmitt, Rose (Steve) Redmond, Dr. Linda (Jim) Helsel, Thomas Schmitt, Pat (Ted) Masselink, Loretta (Terry) Smith, and Kathy (Todd) DeVos. Also surviving are Bob's sisters, Lois Hillis of Kokomo, IN, Therese Fortier of Traverse City, and sisters-in-law Marion Schmitt of Midland and Eileen Sheets of Grand Rapids, along with twenty grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and friends. After attending St. Joseph's Seminary, Bob joined the Army and proudly served his country at the end of WW II. Bob went to electronics school and worked for a time in television and radio. His last years prior to his retirement were spent working for Reynold's Metals in Grand Rapids. Bob was a member of Holy Spirit Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Monday, Feb. 6, 2012 at 11:00 am at Holy Spirit Church 2230 Lake Michigan Dr. NW 49504. Interment at a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the Mass. Memorial contributions to Holy Spirit Church or Faith Hospice would be appreciated.
